Long View Estate

This eight-acre ridge-top site is one of the most spectacular properties in East Tennessee, with commanding views of a wide bend in the Tennessee River framed by the Great Smoky Mountains. We honored garden designer Russell Page’s dictum that a landscape can never compete with a dramatic view but must instead serve it. We created a formal, understated, and clean geometry in conjunction with a simple palette and a planting scheme that echoes the locale’s seasonal changes. Hedges and evergreens are placed to highlight the legacy trees with site-stately pines, beeches, and enormous oaks. The greenery frames outdoor rooms including a pool, motor courts, and areas for gathering, each of which offers breathtaking views. In keeping with Page’s maxim, the estate achieves a humble deference to and appreciation of the site’s natural assets.
