Sequoyah Estate
Situated in a historic neighborhood on the banks of the Tennessee River, this project results from a strong collaboration between landscape architect, architect, interior designer, and client. The product is a transformed estate embodying the power of judicious design.
Distinctively English yet uniquely Southern, SWH sought to transfigure this property into a legacy estate. The gardens exist in concert with the river—juxtaposing when appropriate, subordinating when necessary. The grounds simultaneously provide a setting for frequent garden parties on the tent lawn and intimate evenings by the water.
Plant selections reinforce the guiding vision of the garden, with masses of hydrangeas defining key landscape borders and Maples establishing a dramatic bosque. Like the landscape, hardscape materials are appropriate to the site’s context. Relying on Pennsylvania Bluestone, Tennessee Limestone, and Indiana Limestone, the site’s hardscape has been edited to aid in the seamless transition between spaces. Meticulously detailed ironwork in the garden’s overthrow, railing, and fencing further grounds the architecture to the garden.
